VA Back Pay Calculator
Estimate VA retroactive pay from your effective date to your decision date. Counts the payable months (payment starts the first of the month after the effective date), applies the correct rate table across December 1 rate-year boundaries, and itemizes the total by rate year.
Works offline — your inputs never leave this device. How that works
Payment begins the first day of the month after the effective date; rate years change each December 1. VA typically deposits retroactive pay within about 15 days of the decision.

🎓 Understand this tool
What it is
An estimator for VA retroactive pay: the lump sum covering the months between your award's effective date and the decision that granted it, valued at the rate tables actually in force during those months.
How it works
Payment legally begins the first day of the month after the effective date (38 U.S.C. 5111). The calculator walks month by month to the decision date, applies the verified rate table in force each month — crossing the December 1 COLA boundary correctly — and totals the result by rate year.
Getting the most from it
- Copy the effective date and decision date from your decision letter.
- Select the combined rating and the dependent status VA awarded.
- Check the per-rate-year breakdown to see where the December boundary fell.
Reading your result
The total is the gross retroactive amount before any offsets (severance recoupment, drill-pay offsets, attorney fees at the appeal stage). If your dependents changed during the span, the true total differs — VA computes each month on your actual family status.
What it can't tell you
It cannot know offsets, intervening rating changes, or dependency-effective-date nuances in your file. VA's award letter arithmetic is the determination; this shows how that arithmetic works.
