Accessibility Statement

Government pay and benefits tools are used by veterans, people with disabilities, and older adults more than almost any other kind of calculator. Accessibility is therefore not a checkbox here — it is part of the product. Gov Money Benefits targets WCAG 2.1 AA conformance across the site.

What we do

  • Full keyboard navigation — every calculator, menu, and dialog is operable without a mouse
  • Visible focus indicators and a logical tab order throughout
  • ARIA labels, roles, and live regions so results are announced to screen readers
  • Form inputs with programmatic labels, units, and error messages
  • Color-contrast ratios meeting AA in both light and dark mode
  • Reduced-motion support via prefers-reduced-motion
  • High-contrast support via prefers-contrast
  • Screen-reader testing with NVDA and VoiceOver

Plain-language mode

Benefits math is buried in jargon — high-3, MRA, AIME, PIA, MHA. Our calculators include a plain-language mode that swaps these terms for everyday phrasing (for example, “high-3” becomes “your best 3-year average salary”), so the tools remain usable if you have never read an agency handbook. Cognitive accessibility counts too.

Known limitations

Interactive charts may have limited screen-reader support; wherever a chart appears, the same data is available as an accessible table.
