Combined rating (VA math)

How multiple VA disability percentages merge — not by adding.

The VA combines ratings against remaining capacity, largest first: a 50% rating leaves 50% 'efficiency', so a second 50% rating takes half of the remainder for a combined 75%, which rounds to 80%. That's why 50 + 50 is 80, not 100, under 38 CFR 4.25.
